Wedding Guest Tips

If you are attending a wedding, there are tips that will help you be the perfect guest and some rules about what not to do.

If you are attending a wedding, here are some basic etiquette tips that you should know in order not to embarrass yourself or put the hosts in a difficult poistion.

Can I Bring Extra People to the Wedding or Reception?

  • If you receive an invitation please note…whoever is listed on the invitation, that is who is actually invited. If your invitation is written to both you and a visitor, you may bring one person.
  • If your invitation is addressed to you only, that means you are not allowed to bring a guest.
  • If your invitation does not include your children that means your children are not invited to the wedding. It puts the host or hostess on the spot if you send back your invitation and include your children.
  • You place your host or hostess in a very uncomfortable position with either living with the fact that there will be children when they are not welcome or…
  • They will be forced to call you and tell you “No children allowed,” which could create hard feelings.
  • If the hostess does not specifically say that you can bring your baby, please assume that you can not.
  • It could be very stressful for the spouses when there is a crying infant at the ceremony.
  • If babies and children are allowed, (you will know because they will be on the invitation)Please don’t let them stay at the ceremony if they are crying or yelling, preferably before the bride walks down the aisle.
  • Please understand that weddings normally cost a lot of money, and if you bring guests that are not on the invitation this is costing your hostess additional money, on an already expensive event.
  • If you know of somebody that will not be attending the wedding, it is not acceptable to ask the host or hostess whether you may invite guests.
  • Please understand that a lot of thought goes into a wedding regarding food and seating arrangements, if you bring extra people with you, there may not be a place for them to sit.
  • Weddings are very stressful times, and it is important that you be as thoughtful as possible.

What to Wear to a Wedding

  • You should never wear white, unless the bride requests that you do so.

A wedding is an event that can be fun, but you should also know that it does not mean it’s a free night out for you and your guest. Please be considerate and thoughtful and give an appropriate gift. The couple invited you because they really want to share their day with you, have fun and enjoy.
